Rising Star Award - Edited

Investing in the next generation of entrepreneurs…

Michael Portillo was welcomed as the revered host of the Business Leader Awards 2019, last month, at Ashton Gate.

The ceremony was a great advert for business in the South-West, with the competition the fiercest it’s ever been.

MHI were the sponsor of the Rising Star Award, which recognises a young businessperson who has shown extraordinary business talent over the past 12 months. This year’s winner was Alicia Teagle (pictured alongside Michael Portillo & MHI CEO, Paul Brown) who is the co-founder of Socially Responsible Recruitment.

Earlier this year, Paul was awarded the Lifetime Achievement at the Bristol Live Business Awards, for his commitment to Bristol business & community over the past two decades.

Much of this is down to Paul not only investing in youth within MHI, but advocating for it on a regional scale. This is demonstrated in his position at UWE, where Paul sits on the business management advisory board, ensuring that soon-to-be graduates are prepared for SME life when they leave university.

In the previous 12 months, MHI have put youth at the forefront of their employment strategy – employing graduates from a variety of universities such as UWE, Bath & Swansea (pictured above).

As well as this, MHI have taken on a placement student from the UWE Business School, Luke Turnbull, who will return for his final year armed with valuable industry experience.

As justification for this, Paul states “We remember our roots. In our 20’s & 30’s, Alex & I were the tech-disruptors of postal logistics. At MHI, we thrive by supporting the energy of tomorrow’s Business Leaders.”

With continued mentorship from Paul & Alex, who still harbour their entrepreneurial mindsets as keenly as they did two decades previously – they’ll hope that, one day, a Rising Star may emerge from within their own ranks.
